Heifer Project
International (HPI) is a grassroots organization that provides
animals and training in their care to hungry families around
the world. The Heifer Project was founded in 1944 on the simple
belief that when people have the means to feed themselves, they
will not go hungry again. HPI has helped more than one million
struggling families worldwide become self-reliant through the
gift of livestock, giving parents and children new hope for a
life free from poverty and hunger.
For example, when HPI provides
a cow to a family, the family can collect about five gallons
of milk each day -- plenty of nourishing milk full of protein
and vitamins for the family to drink. There is usually enough
milk left over to sell the rest and earn income for school, medicine,
clothing and food. In addition, the gift of a cow can multiply
over time as each family will also pass along one or more of
their animals' offspring to help yet another family.
Examples of items that HPI can
provide for a given contribution include:
- $20 can purchase a flock of
chicks that will add nourishing, life-sustaining eggs to a hungry
family's diet
- $35 can buy a share of a water
buffalo, to provide needy children and parents with milk, manure
for fertilizer and fuel, and draft power for planting crops and
hauling heavy loads
- $50 can purchase a share of
a heifer that will free a family from the threat of starvation
